NPS Image Editor Platforms

NPS Image Editor has historically been a Windows desktop application, but with the "Amethyst" (version 5.x) release, it's becoming available on more platforms including mobile ones. So which one should you run?

Browser

NPS Image Editor can run in a browser without installation or as a lightweight PWA that works on all platforms. While this is the easiest way to try NPS, it also has some limitations you should be aware of.

Limitations of the browser version include:

• No file management. You can open files, edit them, and download a saved "copy" but you cannot repeatedly save to the same file. You also can't easily access recently-opened files.
• No file registration. You can't double-click a .NPSD file to open it in NPS Image Editor this way.
• No system menu. On macOS, you're stuck with a "Windows style" menu within the PWA, rather than the system menu other apps use.
• Disk restrictions. Any customizations, in-use documents, and undo data are limited to the browser's IndexedDB which limits your storage and can be purged at any time.

Privacy

Although this version of NPS Image Editor runs in a browser, it runs entirely "client side". Any files you upload to it stay within the browser and do not make their way to Nookkin.com servers in any scenario. Review the full Privacy Policy for more details.

Windows Desktop

If you're on Windows, it is recommended that you run the latest version 4.x at this point. It is fully functional and has stood the test of time.

Eventually, the desktop version will allow you to choose between the classic and new UI while keeping the file management, custom brushes/textures/palettes/templates, full GIF support, and the ability to have multiple windows interacting with each other.

Linux

The Linux version installs via Flatpak which makes it easy to install or remove, and integrates with the filesystem to allow opening .npsd files. You can also open multiple instances to work on multiple documents at a time.

macOS

The macOS version integrates with the system menu bar like other macOS apps do, allows opening .npsd files directly from Finder, and allows multiple documents to be open at the same time.

Android

The Android version installs from the Google Play Store or via sideloaded APK. You'll get file access and better platform integration, including a launcher icon with Color Picker access via long-press, and a notification to allow long-running operations to complete in the background.

iPhone and iPad

The iOS version installs from the Apple App Store and allows "sharing" images from your gallery directly into NPS Image Editor for editing.
